Asha Seattle

Rahul Kashikar

Namaskar,

I, Rahul am proud member of the Team Asha 2013 biking group. I'm participating in STP 2013, a 200+ mile bike ride from Seattle to Portland on July 14-15th. And yes it sounds insane and many people have asked me why? few even suggested that there are better transport options to go to Portland and I should seriously consider them......but jokes apart here is why I'm doing it....

The STP provides charity-riders like us an excellent opportunity to connect with other like-minded individuals and organizations. Following the adage “Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime,” I'm active collaborator on various ASHA for Education projects that serve to instill self-belief and vocational skills in the underprivileged children from all parts of India. We strongly believe in building a strong foundation starting from the individual and expanding outward to the society – one child at a time.

I request you to join me in my efforts for creating a self-reliant generation of future entrepreneurs, scientists, global citizens who will lift themselves and their communities beyond their current means of livelihood.

Why Asha?

Asha is a zero-overhead organization - your entire donation goes to fund projects. All day-to-day expenses of running the organization and arranging fundraising activities like the STP ride, are borne by the volunteers like us. All funds raised from this program will go towards our project partners in India. You can read more about the projects at: Projects funded by Asha Seattle

Why you?

This journey means pedaling 10 hours a day for two days. With each passing hour it is going to get tough but thinking of the difference it would make to someone else's less fortunate life will help us keep rolling. If you are visiting this page, you are most probably one of my friends, colleagues or loved ones. Wouldn't you like to encourage me in this expedition?

If you are an employee of socially-aware corporations such as Microsoft, Yahoo, Google (or similar), your contribution could be even more valuable! Your employer has committed to match your donation dollar-to-dollar, typically above a fairly low threshold ($25) - thereby doubling the impact of your generosity! Please support ASHA for Education by contributing generously using the link on this page.

It is amazing how far a dollar can go in helping those people who struggle each day for the most basic necessities of life (food, water and a roof to live under). Consider this:

$30 per month will help a 3 children get basic education

$38 per month will cover the education and living expenses of 2 children with disability

$40 per month will help support a primary school of about 25-30 children

So whatever you contribute for sponsoring my ride, every dollar will make a positive difference in someone's life.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average American Family of 4 spends over $2000 every year on non-essential expenses (gifts, shopping at mall, dining out, entertainment etc). (see complete data here).

Can you make a difference? My target is to raise $1000 this year. Can you help us achieve that?.

My further committment I'll match dollar for dollar for first 50% of the $1000.

Thank you,
Rahul Kashikar.
