Project details - Silicon Valley

Asha Darshan

Initial discussions on the project proposal:

1. This proposal is only for one year and has recurring costs. What are plans for self sufficiency? What is the Asha Center that is being envisioned around Sevika Niketan? . Though the proposal is at the moment for 1 year, we will be submitting the proposal for second year. Some of the cost especially for trainings and some investment costs for SHGs will be met by grant and loans from bank.We hope to generate some income from IGP. We hope that this team will become more cohesive and new members as part of team and some members to support the team from outside as volunteers will be formed which will be part of Asha-center.Asha centre apart from working in Tamalpur block will be supporting peace and education initiatives in North-East especially in Assam.

2. Proposal is not clear about the number of Balwadis. Is it 7 existing ones and 3 more, to make it a total of 10 and then get two teachers per Balwadi, to make it 20 teachers?
Yes, there will be 10 balwadis and hence 20 teachers.

3. How are the students being taught now?
Some of the students are studying in 7 balwadis and mostly others are not going to any schools but are at home.

4. What happens to the kids after the Balwadis? Do they go to regular schools? Are there schools nearby? How many go there?
6 out of 10 go to regular Govt. run schools which are either in their own village or in nearby village. We hope to inculcate value of education so that all of them will start going to regular schools.

5. What will be taught in the Balwadis?
Balwadis are like play-schools but some skills of 3 R's will be introduced. But the focus will be value education through games, stories, songs and teachers as role models.

6. How many hours a day do the kids spend there? What do they do with the rest of the time?
Balwadis will be run for 3 hrs. daily. Rest of the time children are at home.

7. How are the funds for the 7 Balwadis being met now?
Yes, funds till last years for 7 balwadis was met by Bodo Autonomous Council but not any more

8. Where will the 20 teachers come from, for the balwadis? Will women from the SHGs teach in these Balwadis?
20 teachers will be from same villages or nearby villages. Some of them are part of SHGs.

9. Do you provide nutrition also for the kids in the Balwadis? What do the kids do for food?
Though nutrition is not included if possible we will like to include it.

10. The proposal says that the SHGs were offered money from the banks . Why was money from banks for SHGs not taken?
SHGs are now in the position of accepting loans from bank. In some cases the process has already begun. But as this involves a lot of sanctioning and involvement of bureaucracy the process is slow.

11. Why 25,000 for traveling? Why 7200 for 4 bicycles?
Rs. 25,000 is not only for organisers' travelling but includes travelling cost of SHG members, teachers & resource persons for training.

12.What would happen if SV chapter decided to fund only the Balwadis. Can money for the organizers be found?
If S.V. chapter does not fund the full project we will approach another chapter but we will certainly prefer if only one chapter funds the whole project as both Education and SHG are interrelated components of theproject.
