Asha for Education Silicon Valley's Support-A-Child (SAC) programme consists of five projects located in different parts of India.

The programme now has a strength of more than 350 children whose education and living expenses are being supported by sponsors from all over the world. Read on to learn about the projects.
 


 

VidyaKiran is a project to support students who are academically bright but economically constrained and have the desire to continue college education. The project is targeted at students aged 15-22 to continue their higher education after SSLC. The goals of the project are:

  • To provide information on various courses and colleges
  • To collaborate with educational institutions towards improvements of resources and facilities
  • To assist students in developing the skills to handle the academic stresses they face during college
  • To support merit students with scholarship

This project is covering students from three taluks - H.D.Kote, Mysore (rural), and Hunsur of the Mysore district.

Basera-Tabassum runs a child home for girl orphans in Kupwara, the militancy-inflicted border areas of Jammu and Kashmir. This safe and homely environment allows the girls to pursue their educational ambitions in nearby government and private schools. These girls come from low income families - daily laborers, masons, farmers. With fathers dead or killed, the sole bread earner of the family is lost and mothers being housewives, they family has to depend on relatives. Asha for Education's support goes to the educational and living expenses of the children at Kupwara hostel such as:

  • Clothes including uniforms
  • Books and other studying material
  • Daily meals
  • Other living expenses like toileries and bedding

The CDDP project has schools in four villages near Chennai. Children at the CDDP project receive:

  • Education at non-formal schools initially
  • School supplies and books
  • Uniforms and a nutritious snack
  • Coaching/tutoring once they enter government schools

TF Stars project is a partnership between Asha and Tomorrow's Foundation to provide educational and other support to children living in the high-risk area around Kalighat temple in Kolkata. Students at the TF Stars project receive:

  • School tuition, uniforms and hostel through other organizations
  • Educational material and books
  • Career counseling and vocational training
  • Mental and physical healthcare, and crisis support
  • Support from primary school through college

Students at the Sowbhagya project receive:

  • School tuition and uniforms
  • Educational material and books
  • Tutorial classes to help the children to succeed in the more competitive high school and college environment
  • Support from primary school through college

Project Location:         Sowbhagya Educational Trust

                                   Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India


 

This project sends children from the urban slums of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad to the Ankur school located in Pune, where they receive formal education. The children come from families of varied backgrounds such as daily laborers, rag pickers, sweepers, and unemployed in some cases.

Core aspects of the Ankur project include:

  • Educating children from varying socio-economic backgrounds and different capabilities.
  • Providing a thorough grounding in mathematics, history, science, arts, foreign languages and vocational courses
  • Training for teachers to develop sensitivity towards children from varying backgrounds
  • Regular assessment of student progress and timely detection of potential learning disabilities
