sha for Education's mission is to catalyze socioeconomic change in India through the medium of education. We adopt a multi-pronged strategy based on the needs and circumstances of the marginalized groups with which we work. Accordingly, we have initiated dialogues with and support for a variety of development initiatives in India: projects that work with children of migratory laborers, street children, children with disabilities and children rescued from the sex trade; advocacy groups that strive to improve the quality of teachers, sustain the motivation of first-generation learners and emphasize rights education; and so on and so forth. Within this shared organizational framework, each of the bay area chapters focuses on one or more of the above areas....

s the founding chapter of Asha for Education, Asha Berkeley is proud of the work we are doing to achieve the group's lofty goals. With the dedicated support of our cherished volunteers and patrons, the work of Asha Berkeley continues to be vital and relevant to the needs of underprivileged children in India.

This has already been a busy year for our chapter. We were recently involved in three fundraisers, Springfest at the University of California, Berkeley, Ooh Odissi and a performance by Eastern Winds and Naach Company. Moreover, we will be putting up the 14th consecutive year of Images of India on November 13th. All told, we expect to raise over US$30,000 in 2004.

Under the strong leadership of our project coordinators, support for Asha Berkeley projects is strengthening. Though we have a limited budget, we would like to make a great impact in the communities we fund. In keeping with this vision, Asha Berkeley funds new social entrepreneurs with great ideas but limited ability to implement them. We recognize that our projects are high risk, but with our contribution, we aim to have these entrepreneurs bootstrap their projects and give their ideas a chance to succeed.

Asha Berkeley meets the third Saturday of every month at the International House, Berkeley. Please visit our website, learn more and join us.

The ethos of Berkeley, with its contribution to making the world a more peaceful place, is a source of energy and optimism to us. With your support, Asha Berkeley strives to contribute to this ethos and succeed in our mission to provide equal opportunity for all.

sha Silicon Valley has grown over the years to where it is today with independent units of volunteers working on focus areas, like the projects team which reviews and monitors projects, the marathon team that organizes the Harbingers of Hope program and the Support A Child team that helps sponsors support kids on a one-to-one basis. This is what has helped us work with over 20 project partners in India and raise over US$250,000 annually. In the immediate future the chapter intends to focus on understanding more about teaching aids and how they can be used to improve the learning experience at our projects.

We meet every Wednesday in Silicon Valley and all are welcome and encouraged to drop by at our meetings. Visit our Website to learn more.
