Secondary Stewardship: An Introduction
While the primary steward looks after all the logistics of
tracking the particular project she/he is responsible for, the
secondary steward acts in an advisory capacity to ensure the
primary steward's work goes smoothly. The secondary steward may
stand in for the primary steward in the latter's absence. Often,
when communication with the project is difficult, or if things are
frustrating or just not going well, she/he may be able to maintain
the primary steward's motivation and commitment to the project.
The secondary steward also ensures that the handling of the
project is in keeping with the spirit and general guidelines of
Asha - this is an important responsibility because often the
primary steward may be a relatively new volunteer with Asha. The
secondary steward is specially encouraged to see that all matters
of sensitivity are handled adequately.
Secondary Stewardship: Roles
- Familiarize Yourself with Project Details.
- Act in Advisory Role to aid to the primary steward in
understanding and abiding by the projects process including
especially the powerpoint template, required site visits and
5-month follow-up presentations (which are required to
release the second half of funds for any given year).
- Make Certain to be Cc'ed on all communication between
the primary steward and the project.
- Be Sensitive to issues of perceived condescension
and skewed power relationships between new primary
stewards and project directors in India. Note that Asha
Stanford strives to be partners, not patrons, to the
projects/NGOs it funds.
- Represent the Project to the group in the absence
of the primary steward.
