| Asha-St. Louis is
a chapter of Asha, a non-profit voluntary
organisation dedicated to increasing literacy among children in India.
Asha was started in 1991 when its founding chapter was formed in
Berkeley to promote basic education for poor and underprivileged
children in India. Since then it has grown in strength and number, and
today Asha has over 40 chapters in North America alone. The
basis of this pursuit is the firm belief that an educated population is
critical requisite as well as an effective catalyst for social and
economic change in India. Asha-St. Louis was formed
in September 1996 by diverse group of students from Washington
University and the greater Saint Louis area. The aim of the group is to
mobilize the local population to collectively support and provide
financial assistance to grass-roots level education movements in India.
To maximize effectiveness of its efforts, Asha-St. Louis seeks
to support educational projects in rural and economically backward
areas. Members of Asha attempt to maintain a close personal involvement
with the organizations and projects that are sponsored. The
group is steadily growing and has many volunteers. The core group works
in informal focus groups that handle various facets of the activities
of the chapter. Asha-St. Louis is a non-profit
voluntary organization. It does not have any political or religious
affiliations. All administrative expenses are met by the core
volunteers. 100% of your donations contribute towards supporting Asha's
projects in India. A preliminary copy of the constitution as it
has been drawn is available for your perusal. So are the by-laws and project guidelines.
