Asha-Syracuse had its humble beginnings during late 1991. A Syracuse student named Anand met a doctoral student from Berkeley, named Sandeep Pandey. Anand got together with some students of Maxwell School and organized a ‘Ghazal Night,’ and sold tickets . Back then there were about 9-10 people getting together informally and the donations were stored in a box.
Little later an Indian student band from Ohio State came to Syracuse for a concert of light Hindi film songs. A couple of years later we started showing movies on a regular basis. The group always took the character of the people running it: sometimes it was concerts only, or it was any movie that would sell, or it was movies with a ‘social message.’ The group hit a lean patch in 1993 with just 3 students—Ravi, Shalini and Anand— keeping it going. In fact, the three came within a whisker of throwing in the towel as they were all trying to complete their degrees. A fresh breeze swept the organization in 1994.

We have grown a long way from being a fountainhead of thoughts to becoming an organization that blends thoughts into actions. We are an active body of 12-15 students led by Radha Ganesan. We are a registered student organization at S.U., and also operate out of our own bank account. >> read more about our members

We often collaborate with the student run Syracuse India Association (SIA), as well as the South Asia Center at the Global Affairs Institute, Maxwell School of Syracuse University. SIA has helped us run fundraisers, such as penny box drives and movie screenings. We have co-sponsored a number of lectures and talks with the South Asia Center. >> read more about our fundraisers

We meet every alternate Friday, at 5p.m., in Room 232, Schine Student Center, Syracuse University.
