Asha-Akshar
Support eradication of illiteracy in your home

Anyone who knows about "Asha for Education" knows that it supports the education of underprivileged children in India. But "Asha-Akshar" project is unique in that it gives individuals like you and me the opportunity to make an immediate, tangible difference, in our own house.

You will see the results of your efforts to eradicate illiteracy very directly: Take responsibility for the education of just one underprivileged child you, or your family, know—your servant maid's child or your car driver's child or the child of a rag-picker in your street or a wandering child from a slum nearby... In essence, you are pledging that you'll do your part to eliminate illiteracy from your own backyard. This is the vision of Asha-Akshar - very simple personal responsibility yet you make a profound difference.

Project Vision

Provide an opportunity for everyone to contribute positively and tangibly to India’s socio-economic development by involving families and local communities in a simple yet profound activity.

Project Mission

Support the basic education of children of maidservants that work in urban households.

Plan of Action

  • Reach out to Asha volunteers in India first before reaching out to enroll the general population.

  • Demonstrate proof-of-concept by enrolling 10 ASHA volunteers to examine their own households and reach out to the children of their maidservants.

  • Document results, successes/failures and experiences from the pilot project. Maintain journal of communications.

  • Implement constructive feedback and expand scope of project to cover all ASHA volunteers.

  • Repeat and expand scope of project to cover all of India.
