 Ushagram

The NGO, Ushagram, is based in the Nadia district of West Bengal, India. Ushagram works toward the integrated development of villages which surround its campus. The campus itself is a self sustained unit - they have their own grain production, a primary school, a crafts center, a library, a hostel for girls and meditation centers. Children from nearby villages come to study in the school whereas the adult villagers take part in all the activities of the NGO - from batik printing to jute products making. Ushagram was established in 1983 by Mr Gopal Chakraborty, who spent years in jails because of his participation in the Indian freedom struggle. Ushagram was set up following the principles of Aurobindo Ghosh and Rabindranath Tagore. Asha-Syracuse plans to fund Ushagram to the extent of $2581 during 2003.

Rajasthan Mahila Kalyan Mandal (RMKM) came into being in the year 1975, when heavy floods ravaged Ajmer. Since 1987, RMKM , under the guidance of Mr.Sagarmal Kaushik, has undertook a number of innovative projects for the development and relief of three main categories of people: (i) Women and girl-children (ii) Elderly and (iii) Mentally Retarded Children. In this specific project, 50 girl-students would get enrolled in regular schools and continue their education in the next academic year, after the project period is over. This would require counseling and interventions at the level of the girl-child, her family, as well as the community.

R.M.K.M. can be contacted through postal mail at: R.M.K.M. c/o Mr.Sagarmal Kaushik, 112/10, Civil Lines, Opp. Savitri School, Ajmer 305 006, India. They can be reached through e-mail: aravali@id.eth.net.
