Agenda

1. Nagapattinam – Kallar School Dress Ordered to Suyam Tailoring Centre
Rs 25000 given to Kallar School. Jeba and Dhanalakshmi will be going to kallar village around 25/26th of this month to distribute the dress material to the balwadi kids.Even after so many months the dress material is a neccesity.


2. Kanchepuram Educational Materials Disbursed  to over 2400 children on Aug 17th
Detail Report sent with Photographs by Sathya, Jeba Sathya,  Dhanalakshmi, Lokesh and Adaikalam: See reference 1 for more information

 

Educational material was distributed to children fom 17 schools-(all govt schools)
large percentage of students were from high schools. Material included long books, small & ruled books, report books, some classes geometry box also!
The material was in three lorries and 2550 children have benefitted from this program with was done in association with Pamela foundation and Asha Portland.
There were still about 2000 in elementary schools who did not recieve any help. We will know the exact number/list of other people onext week.

 

3. Chennai District:
Asha Yale to try to send the proposal to Tsunami projects group for review.
Prioirities needing funding
A. Temporary sheets for their shelter: 80 families Rs 16000
B. Fishing business: 100 women and 100 families Rs 12000
Vessel needed for selling the fish by women for their survival
C. Construction workers and carpenters livelihood equipment set (150 families) Rs 1,50,000  

 

Satya spoke with the Collector office and he has asked for a list of families who need support for a place to live and also list of families in construction business who need livelihood support.
Govt will try to provide temporary accomodation/shelter for these people.
Construction workers who were previously enterprenuers are having to rent equipment/work for other people at low wages. There are 150 such families affected by Tsunami. Satya will try to get the govt to atleast cover the shelter for these people so that livelihood can be covered by Asha.

 

4. Two wheeler For Jeba Rs 60,000 ( transfer to Jeba’s AHA fellowship approved by Asha Yale) ; need 800$ more

 

5. 386 villages site visit                 
Covered 24 villages in Vizhupuram, Kancheepuram, Thiruvallur (Jeba, Chandravel, Dhanalakshmi)
Need to translate from Tamil to English. Chandravel busy with other stuff….Satya and Chandravel will try to get in done by end of this month

 

6. Kanyakumari Counseling Centres         Implementation in progress
Smitha From Asha Cleveland Visited Kanyakumari
Center will start first week of October
Smitha will be sending a site visit report to Cleveland chapter?

 

7. Gym & tailoring centre in Cuddalore (Siddhamma)
Compound wall construction going on; update needed
Jeba/Satya will try to do a site-visit. Sidamma has been busy

 

8. Vizhupuram District (Robert)
Education materials; Playing materials given to 6 schools; Many more schools can be reached out;  $1000 raised from Pamela Foundation? Status Needed from Chandrika (Portland)-Vatsan to follow-up
Asha honor team will proceed to use these funds to cover more schools after confirmation from Portland chapter

SIivalingam-Food stuff given by government which came in two lorries was rotten
Jeba will speak to relief commisoner CV Shankar about this

 

9. New proposal for livelihood and marriage support of Tsunami affected youth (Manish, Kapil)
Kapil-Uma will send report in a week. She was busy with her school work.

 

10. AHA Fellowships 
$1200 donation pledged by Prasanna & Ramana Divakaruni in support of Dhanalakshmi’s honorarium. Will be sent to Asha Toledo
Need to raise funds for Sathyapriya to cover end of Aug onwards

Kancheepuram Educational materials – Distribution Report


Introduction:
After a long process, we have been able to make a special day for distribution of educational materials in Kancheepuram tsunami affected villages. For the distribution of educational materials, Mr. Adaikalam (ACDS), Kancheepuram district coordinator has organized an inauguration function in Kuvathur Higher Secondary School on 17th August, 2005 for distributing the materials in 17 villages covering 2550 children.

Description of inauguration function:

In the function, Tahsildar, Kancheepuram district and three former headmasters participated.  The function started at 3.00 pm. It went for 2 hours.  The school campus was very big where more than 1000 children participated.  Few cultural programme was arranged and performed by the students. During the function, they gave certificates for the children for the competition conducted before. 

After that, the distribution of educational materials where we all went and gave the materials to the school masters/mistress.  All the headmasters/mistress came and took the materials.  The Headmasters of all the schools in different villages felt very happy and said heartfelt thanks for our support.  In a week, Mr.Adaikalam and volunteers will be able to distribute all the educational materials to all the 17 villages directly in schools.
 

Feed Back:
The materials which we have provided are very useful for the kids and also I am particularly happy to see the happiness of the children face when they receive the bags and notebooks. Asha helps to motivate the children to study well and make every kid to be colourful rainbows.
