About Gators for Asha
Asha-UFlorida, founded in the Fall semester of 2003, is an action group formed by professionals and students at the University of Florida and the surrounding Gainesville-Ocala region. We intend to mobilize the local community to collectively support this effort. The focus of the group is to raise awareness among the students, the faculty and the local community about the need for promoting basic education in India.
The objectives of this group are:
1. To provide education to underprivileged children in India.
2. To support and cooperate with persons and groups already engaged in similar activities.
3. To raise the required human and other resources to achieve the group objectives.
4. To provide opportunity to individuals based in the U.S. who wish to participate in Asha activities in India.
5. To address, whenever possible, other issues affecting human life such as health care, environment, socio-economic aspects and women's issues.
The group will fund a number of educational projects in rural India and maintain a close personal involvement with them. 100% of the funds collected will be used to support projects in India, all administrative costs are borne by volunteers of Asha.

About the Event: Counting the digits individually 0,1,2,... the numbers never surpass 9. When put together, however, digits even cannot express how many numbers are there. There are not many ways you can use a penny. Put enough pennies together, however, you will be surprised to see the ways you can use it. One such noble use is for education. Asha for Education has been working to catalyze socio-economic change in India through education of underprivileged children. On the occasion of Children's Day and Thanksgiving, it is hosting Penny and Book Drive in Gainesville from November 14, 2010 to December 14, 2010. You can donate your pennies from penny box or old books from book shelf at any location (School or Apartment complex). Event in Highlight--Work An Hour 2010
Take a minute. Donate an hour. Change a life.
Work An Hour, or WAH, as it is popularly known, is a simple concept.
We ask you to symbolically contribute one hour of your time towards the cause of children's education by donating an hour's worth of your salary or more.
What is Work An Hour?
Each year, people from around the world come together in a demonstration of great human spirit, to help educate underprivileged children in India. Work An Hour, or WAH, as it is popularly known, is a summer-long, global, online fundraising campaign based on a simple concept:
" Participants are asked to symbolically Work an Hour towards the cause of children's education by donating an hour's worth or more of their salary."
Timeline
This year, the event begins on July 15 and concludes on September 15 spanning through India's Independence Day on August 15 and Teachers' Day on September 5.
How does it work?
Thirteen projects across Asha have been showcased in this year's WAH. Donors will have the ability to give to a project of their choice.
Asha's project partners selected for WAH support, typically require larger sums of money, more than what a single Asha chapter can raise, in order to facilitate fixed expenditure on items such as infrastructure, construction and other one-time costs and recurring expenses. WAH aims to help such projects by this worldwide campaign to raise funds across all projects.
All Asha projects are closely monitored by Asha project coordinators to ensure that the funds are being properly utilized and the proposed benefits are actually being realized by the children in the project.
History
The first WAH campaign started in 1998, raised over $30,000 from close to 700 donors. Last year, WAH raised over $146,000 with a donor base of over 900 participants.
Projects chosen in the past included a wide range of education initiatives, such as educating slum children, improving quality of education in schools, educating children of sexworkers, and empowering rural and tribal communities. This year's campaign addresses the challenges that come along the path of almost every project that Asha receives. These range from physical and mental disabilities, child labor, remote un-develeoped locations, to extreme poverty. This year's projects showcase how they work to overcome all the challenges that come their way and keep up the motivation to succeed.
