Welcome to Work An
Hour, the largest worldwide Asha event where we focus on 1-3 villages
annually and work together to make a dramatic impact on education
overnight. Each year during the time of India's Independence day,
volunteers from around the world come together in a show of great
human spirit, and contribute their one hour's pay towards educating
underprivileged children in India.
Work An Hour '98
generated awareness about economically challenged children in
Ballia, migrant child laborers in Kanpur, and physically challenged
children in the outskirts of Delhi. A total of $32,000 was raised to improve
the condition of the children in these projects.
This year we received
a total of 6 project proposals for Work An Hour '99 support from
5 states covering Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, West
Bengal and Andhra Pradesh. The Work An Hour projects working group
ensured that all proposals met exacting guidelines before they
were sent for Asha wide review.
Nineteen chapters participated in the
selection process to choose the following three projects:
Project #1
Building a school for child laborers in West Bengal.
Vivekananda Education Society (VESC).
