First Work An Hour

The first Work an Hour campaign started in 1998. In the past 13 years, WAH has supported varied projects in different parts of India. It has raised an average of over $100,000 every year. Each year, WAH has catered to a different segment in India and worked towards solving different issues with its projects.

WAH 2010: Impetus to Succeed

Children struggling to get an education at schools where teachers are regularly absent. Girls who drop out of school early due to lack of support at home. Generations who stay stuck in illiteracy and poverty due to the constraints of migrant and child labor.

In a developing nation like India, stories like these have persisted for so long and in such numbers, that it is easy to forget that even today there are many, many individuals trapped in just such realities. But what if someone were to lend them a hand, help them help themselves? Would that make a difference? Will you be the one to provide them a helping hand, an hour of your time - the impetus to succeed.

In WAH 2010 , we worked on 13 projects which included 28 schools and 2214 children.

WAH 2009: Quality of Education. Prepare. Educate. Empower

In almost all measures of development, India has come a long way, especially since the start of this century. But as in the case of our economy, the gains have not been uniform. In primary education, India has made great strides as far as the provision of access and coverage is concerned, by achieving an enrollment ratio of 95 per cent, but in terms of education quality, it only ranks sixth among the seven emerging economies of the world.

By supporting WAH 2009 along with Asha for Education, we helped 'Prepare' the students for a competitive world by 'Educating' them in a quality environment and 'Empowering' the marginalized communities.

WAH 2008: Empowering rural India. One child at a time.

The Indian economy is primarily agrarian. Through the current free market & globalization trends, more than 70% of the country still depends on agriculture and related industries based in the heartlands. While there are fantastic reports of economic growth and tremendous increase in GDP, over 27.5% of the people still live below the poverty line.

The WAH 2008 projects were based in rural parts of the country and focused on innovative ways of strengthening the school systems through better infrastructure, teaching methods, adequate supplies and well trained teachers.

By supporting these 15 projects, WAH presented a unique opportunity where participants' own income from work helped alleviate problems encountered by children in marginalized communities.
