The BTS Patha Bhavan was formed in 1983 with support from a Lutheran World Service. BTS-Patha Bhavan is the working children’s education initiative of the organization. This was the first venture into development support in 1983 for the poor working children of Kultali which was later upgraded to the Upper Primary (High School) level. Presently, there are 246 students in 9 classes from Preparatory to Class VII. Most of the students are from very poor family background. Joyful learning, an interactive teaching method. In addition to that students are provided with nutritional and healthcare support.

They are also running a Children Resource Library and a Computer Literacy Center to support children’s education and technical capacities in this remote rural area. BTS also provides Books to Poor Students (BPS). The school has recently adopted a curriculum that aims to inspire children in creative and scientific temperament. The morning session consists of regular schooling and the afternoon session consists of the children being involved in activities like clay modeling, dance and drama, fishery, embroidery, or informal classes on mathematics and botany. Each child is free to choose his/her activity based on interest. The school has a voluntary fee of Rs 20 per month.

1. Initiation of the school at such a remote corner is itself a challenge.
2. Financial constraint and involvement of good teachers were big issues as well.
3. Room problems, infrastructural insufficiency were the other challenges faced.

Story -I:

Perhaps it had been Pradip’s adversity, if it was not possible for his father’s try to contact one of BTS-PathBhavan’s Teachers who led him to get admitted at the school supported by Asha for Education, USA. Now today Pradip is in 2nd year of Mathematics-Honors Degree Course under University of Calcutta. He is from a hand to mouth family. His parents led their families by catching prawn seeds in the rivers of Sunderban. He got star marks (75% and more) in Madhyamik (Xth grade board exam) and 1st (60% and more) division in Higher-Secondary exam. Later he appeared in the joint entrance, but unfortunately missed to avail the resources for it.

Story -II:

Subhankar, a student in University of Calcutta now, studying in the 2nd year. His father, Bimal Giri, is a daily wage labour and leads a very unsecured miserable life without any social status. One day Subhankar’s father requested the Secretary of BTS to help him to get his son admitted. He availed sta marks in Madhyamik exam and 1st Division in Higher Secondary exam. Subhankar is the spirit and hope of his poor father today. He is a brilliant student and pride of our village, Baikunthapur.

Story -III:

Goutam is now teacher of Bhubaneswari Joykrishna Higher Secondary School. His father, Sunil Maiti is a poor person, completely unable to continue his studies. Goutam was enrolled at BTS-PathBhavan and graduated from BTS-PathBhavan after Class-IV. He got admitted to Baikunthapur High School. He got 1st division both in Madhyamik And Higher Secondary exams. Goutam is now making promises for the future of the locality being a teacher. He is really our pride.
• Year by year enrollment has increased
• Community participation is ensured by promoting parents-teachers’ interactions etc.
• The mud built rooms of the school were converted into a “pucca” building with supports from Asha for Education, USA
• Other infrastructures like chair/benches/rooms/library (part) solar powered lights, etc were availed
• BTS with supports from WAH constructed 3 government-aided primary schools for more children's enrollment
• The school is a popular one after proving brilliant-results over the years
• To make it a high school and have government affiliation (either aided or non-aided)
• To enroll more children of the area with making more classrooms or creating other infrastructures like playground, hostel (boys & girls), better library with book bank facilities
• To make the school more popular and even a model school of ‘Joyful Learning’, so that students from different parts feel eager to join the school and interested to have better result
• To make it a school of value-added education with ample scope of vocational-orientation
