Sukrupa is a 9 year old, registered non-profit charitable organization that addresses the socio-economic development of the disadvantaged in urban and rural Bangalore, India. The programs offered currently through Sukrupa include:
1) Free Schooling, from pre-school through class 10
2) Youth training in life skills, distant learning and college education
3) Community and rural economic development benefiting adults and families
These programs work together to provide all of Sukrupa’s participants with the knowledge and skills required for a dignified and sustainable life as the precursor to the elimination of urban slums and rural poverty in India.
Sukrupa works with deprived children and young adults, providing a secure environment, schooling and skills training that enable them to escape poverty, slum life, illiteracy, and ignorance. Sukrupa breaks the poverty cycle for these individuals and their families by creating opportunities so that they are able to integrate fully as participants and contributors in mainstream society.
Sukrupa’s mission is to help deprived children and young adults escape a background of poverty, slum life, illiteracy, and ignorance thereby creating opportunities for their integration into mainstream society
As a non-profit charitable organization following are some of the challenges faced by SUKRUPA.
- Funding is a major challenge as the number keeps growing every year as Sukrupa manages a formal school.
- Good trained professional teachers are a huge challenge to recruit as wthey do not have a proper infrastructure facility and also a good scale of remuneration is very hard for Sukrupa to pay currently.
- Building a good volunteer base- They are finding it a difficult to get more volunteers interested in Sukrupa and the activities.
- Creating visibility for the project and promoting the project to the right audience.
- Prashanth and Asif, two of SUKRUPA students are part of the AFS (America Field Service) program and currently are exchange students for a year in Nashville and Salt Lake City doing 11th and 12 Class.
- Robin and Manigandan who are first generation learners, are now in graduation program doing animation and accountancy. They are also part of SUKRUPA Youth Training Program. They completed their class 10 exams scoring first class marks and then completed 12th and SUKRUPA is supporting them to complete their graduation program as well.
- School drop out rate has been reduced drastically from 80% to 5%.
- Sony was a child laborer worked as domestic help after dropping out of school from class 2. She came to SUKRUPA when she was 13 when her mother wanted her to get married. Sony was one of the first kids in the residential program. Sony decided to stay at SUKRUPA and learn instead of going to regular school.
SUKRUPA has trained Sony in reading, writing and spoken English and Math and several skills and currently Sony is the chief coordinator at SUKRUPA Creations, the Social Enterprise that trains and creates employment for the young adults and women in the community, while trying to make SUKRUPA a sustainable project in the coming years through the profits made by the sale of the products made.
- Ramya was a school dropout and a child laborer as a domestic help, cleaning dishes, thus helping her parents who were deep in debt. Ramya has completed her 10th grade and now she is a part of Sukrupa’s Youth
program. She has been with Sukrupa for 8 years. She is training to be a professional dancer and is part of Prayaas, Sukrupa’s dance group.
- Daniel is a student at Sukrupa. Sukrupa discovered Daniel’s talent and now he is training to be a musician. He learns French and is good in academics and sports.
Project Sukrupa was started in 2002 in Bangalore. It addresses the socio-economic development of the disadvantaged in urban and rural Bangalore, India. It offers free schooling from preschool through Class 10, youth training in life skills and distant learning and other community and rural economic development. Over the years, Sukrupa has grown and supports over 450 students currently.
Since its inception, the literacy rate in the local community has risen more than 20%.The literacy rate earlier was less than 10%. The school dropout rate has drastically reduced from 80% to 5%. 35 students have completed 10th grade. Some have completed their 12th grade. Two boys who are first generation learners aredoing graduation in accountancy and animation, while two others are part of AFS (America Field Service) program and currently are exchange students in Salt Lake City. In 2010-2011, nine children have written their 10th grade exam. Along with English, Hindi and Kannada, children are also taught French and German languages.
Besides the Education Center, Sukrupa runs the Youth Training Program where young adults learn life skills to help them attain gainful employment. Sukrupa has also started the Community Development Program that offers health camps, family counseling, parenting and life skills training as well as vocational training to help women and young adults find employment and achieve self-sufficiency.
Sukrupa has expanded its outreach through the students at Sukrupa Youth Training program. The students in this program teach English to underprivileged urban slum and rural children studying in Kannada Government Schools from Class I to VII.
Sukrupa has also established a pilot project with two villages in rural Bangalore as part of its Rural Development Program. The Rural Development Program provides pre-school activities, supplementary education for government school children and vocational training for young adults and women. Future sources of revenue generation for the villages may include organic farming, dairy farming, and renewable energy.
In a nutshell, Sukrupa has constantly evolved to reduce the slums and to create modern model villages.
Project Class Room:
Continued growth and bright futures for the children are major goals of SUKRUPA. The current rented facility has limited space and adaptability. A building that is specifically designed for SUKRUPA would allow efficient implementation of the curriculum and support our programs completely.
The present high school students who are part of SUKRUPA SPECIAL LEADERSHIP PROGRAM are trained in special fun method teaching by professionals and they would be skillfully employed to teach migrant labors’ children. This expansion project of SUKRUPA is in the works and will cater to tens of thousands of children across the nation.
In five years from now the present pre-school would have students who are in 7th grade and would be equal in every aspect with mainstream children of the same age. And the high school children would be skillfully employed in teaching, dancing, sports, designing, photography, sales etc., this will have a direct impact in the lives of all the people in the community.
