Work an hour

Help with Work an Hour

Questions relevant to Europe residents

What is work an hour?

Each year volunteers from around the world come together in a show of great human spirit, to help educate underprivileged children in India. Work An Hour, or WAH, as it is popularly known, is a simple concept. We ask you to symbolically contribute one hour of your time towards the cause of children's education by donating an hour's worth of your salary or more. The event symbolically begins on July 4, the American Independence Day, reaches an apex on August 15, the Indian Independence Day, and finally culminates on September 5, which is celebrated as Teachers' Day in India.

What kind of projects are supported by work an hour?

The projects being supported through Work an Hour 2005 truly represent the breadth and depth of the range of projects supported by Asha for education. All the projects have

1. An Asha chapter that has worked with the NGO/registered organization for at least the past year.
2. A recent (6 month) site-visit report relevant to the proposal.
3. All financial reports on utilization of funds.

When can I donate?

Donations by credit card are accepted between July 4 and September 5, 2005. If you have not sent your donation check (cheque) in yet, see below for mailing address information.

How do I make a donation?

Matching donations: how does this work?

A lot of companies match donations made by their employees. A list of companies can be found at http://www.ashanet.org/workanhour/matching.html. If your employer is not on the list, please contact your HR department to find out if your company matches donations and let us know so that we can add your company's name to our list.

Here's how it works

  • When you make your donation, make an entry in the 'Matching' box.
  • Obtain a matching donation form from your employer's HR dept.
  • Fill it out and mail it to us at

  • Your employer will send us a check (cheque) for the amount that is matched

I would like to help Asha on a more regular basis. What is the best way of doing this?

You can contact you local chapter of Asha if you would like to join Asha as a volunteer. You can find the contact details on this website.

If you would like to donate to Asha on a regular basis please visit this site.

If you are employed in the UK, you can ask your company to set up a payroll donation through JustGiving. This is tax-exempt, and (yes, we are serious!), upto a limit, the UK government would add a 10% bonus if you contribute in this way, nearly doubling the amount that Asha receives. See Payroll Giving section of JustGiving for more information on this. If you are not an employee, you can still set up regular donations to Asha through JustGiving.

Why are UK donors asked to donate through another website?

UK tax laws allow the donations made to a registered charity (Asha is one) to be tax exempt. This means that the donors can claim the tax back on the amount they have donated to Asha, at the time of filing their tax returns. But since not everyone needs to file a tax return, it would be a cumbersome process for most users to file a tax return just to reclaim tax on donations.

JustGiving streamlines this process by automatically claiming 28% tax back on any donations made to charity, so that the charity gets a higher amount. This means that donors can actually donate a smaller amount, taking into account the tax that Asha would be getting back: e.g., if a UK taxpayer wants to give £100 to Asha, they only need donate £78.25 through JustGiving for Asha to get £100. For higher rate taxpayers, JustGiving provides a donation receipt online, which they can print off and attach to their tax-return in order to reclaim the difference between tax reclaimed by JustGiving (28%), and the rate at which they pay tax. Please refer to the Donate page at JustGiving for more information.

What modes of payment does JustGiving accept?

Please refer to the Donate page at JustGiving for the most up-to-date information about payments through their site.

Can I donate by check (cheque) and where do I send it?

Yes, you can donate by check (cheque) in a variety of currencies. Please see question on donation by check (cheque) for more information.

Can I do a direct bank transfer?
